Katharine Gammon (Wired) writes:
Oh, Playboy, why do you want your "readers" to lust after androids? That's the only explanation we can think of for the proportions of your lovely ladybots. We culled the stats for every centerfold from December 1953 (Marilyn Monroe) to January 2009 (Dasha Astafieva), then calculated each woman's body-mass index. A clear trend emerged: While real American women have steadily eaten their way up the BMI slope — just like American men — Playmates have gone from a sylphlike 19.4 to an anime-ideal 17.6.
This is supported by the following nice chart:wiredp

The funny thing is that by looking a little bit closer at the data you can see that the Playmate BMI reached a low in the mid 80ies and afterwards actually trended slightly upwards:

(Discard the first 10 years. There where lots of missing values and I just did a quick linear interpolation.)

Replication
Here is the data set. Here is the R Code:

library(fSeries)
bmi <- read.table("C:/play.txt")
bmi[bmi == 0] <- NA
bmi <- interpNA(bmi, method="linear")
bmi <- ts(bmi, frequency=12, start=c(1953,12))

# First Plot (Hodrick-Prescott Filter)
eye <- diag(length(bmi))
d <- diff(eye,d=2)
hp.100000 <- ts(solve(eye+100000*crossprod(d),bmi), frequency = 12, start = c(1953,12))
plot(bmi, ylab="BMI")
lines(hp.100000, col="blue", lwd=2)

# Second Plot (Seasonal Decomposition of a Time Series by Loess)
plot(stl(bmi[,1], s.window="periodic"))

And over the same timeframe the waist-to-hip ratio has moved up, both as a result of the models getting skinnier overall (I assume) and maybe also as a result of more exercise. Sad. Centerfolds getting more boyish looking.

Boyish looks
I definitely agree with you that many Amercian models pump too much iron. Most of the Miss USA contestants actually look like transvestites. I'm a fan of "skinny" (with an BMI of 20.2 and 9.5% bodyfat I would actually call myself skinny) but I know that there are studies that suggest that fetuses benefit from hip fat that contains polyunsaturated fatty acids critical for the development of the fetus's brain and I have big plans ... Lame.
Sample this:

"I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog."

"Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones."
