The idea behind this website is simple: gather as much information about the environment as possible, and deliver it to as many people as possible. The Maps section contains geographically explicit data broken down into four general categories: Humans, Land Use, Ecosystems, and Water Resources. The Schematics section looks at the various resource flows and pools that make up individual Earth systems.

NB: According to Eurostat (Sub Themes > Population > Demography > Main demographic indicators > Population change : absolute numbers and crude rates) the population growth rate of Austria from 1990 to 1995 was slightly positive (and not slightly negative as shown on the map).

Canto do Brasil, or Song of Brazil, aims to build awareness of the country's current situation. With the click of a mouse, a viewer is walked through a visual depiction of four Brazilian cities: Salvador de Bahia, the soul of Brazil and a mecca for African culture; the State of Minas Gerais, known for its Baroque architecture and colonial past; the beautiful and dangerous city of Rio de Janeiro, famous for its beaches and Carnival; and São Paulo, the worlds fourth largest megalopolis with more than 19 million inhabitants. Voice-over narration brings to life stories of this rapidly changing country, unable to escape tradition.

Haiti: "The Eroding Nation" was conceived and reported by South Florida Sun-Sentinel staff writer Tim Collie and staff photographer Mike Stocker, who made several trips to Haiti and spent more than a month traveling throughout the nation. They interviewed several hundred environmental and land-use experts, government officials, foreign policy analysts and Haitians. <> For more information on Haiti click here.

South Africa: Apartheid was a social and political policy of racial segregation that resulted in the oppression of Black, Indian and Coloured South Africans by the ruling white minority between 1948 and 1994. Despite the severe restrictions on free political debate, resistance groups, such as the African National Congress, fought for liberation even though resistance often resulted in imprisonment or death.
